The Ambassador - Message of Greeting
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the German Embassy’s home page in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei Darussalam.
We are aware that many visitors are interested in our consular services. May I refer you to the consular page offering those services under the competence of the German Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
I am happy to know that you are taking an active interest in the work and services of our Embassy. We are trying to offer useful information about our country as well as our host country, Brunei Darussalam.
Diplomatic relations between our two countries exist since 1984, after Brunei regained its full independence. The then German Foreign Minister, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, personally opened the Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan in July 1985. In July 2015 we could celebrate the 30th Anniversary of our mission in Brunei.
Official visits to Brunei by Chancellor Helmut Khol, in May 1997 and a state visit in March 1998 by His Majesty the Sultan were highlights of our excellent bilateral relations. In 2008, Germany’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Technology visited Brunei Darussalam. Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle, visited Brunei with a larger delegation while attending the ASEAN-EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in April 2012. The close and friendly relations between the two countries are further illustrated by a number of official visits which His Majesty the Sultan paid to Germany in 2002 and 2011.
There is considerable interest in strengthening the existing economic and cultural links. Germany’s industry continues to explore possibilities for larger-scale projects in Brunei within the Sultanate’s framework of economic development and diversification. Health care, renewable energy, environment and scientific research are some of the main cooperation areas. Germany’s institutions of higher learning seem to be increasingly appealing in Brunei. A substantial number of German tourists discover Brunei as a travel destination, aboard German cruise ships and others.
To sum it up, there are quite good prospects to further the bilateral relations between Germany and Brunei as well as our partnership in the context of the intensifying EU-ASEAN co-operation.
